A camel encounter at the Lama Oasis is much more than just „camel riding“. In the middle of Bavaria, you will get to know our camels in peace and quiet, build up trust step by step and experience how relaxed and sensitive camels really are.
More than just riding
It is important to us that you don't just mount up and ride off when you meet a camel. Our camels communicate differently to horses and are also different to lead than llamas - which is exactly what makes them so special. Anyone who gets involved with them quickly senses this uniqueness and builds up a very special relationship with „their“ camel.
Getting to know each other for the first time: greeting on the nose
„You greet the camels by the nose“ - this is how we start every camel encounter. Many visitors are initially impressed by the size of the animals and are still a little shy. But after just a few minutes, they sense the calm that emanates from the Bactrian camels and experience how friendly they react to people.
This is not a matter of course: a helper from Australia, who previously worked with dromedaries, told us that it took her almost a month before she was even allowed to touch a camel there. This makes us all the more appreciative of the trust that our animals place in visitors here.
Brush, guide and show clarity
After the greeting, it's time for the brushing. The camels enjoy being stroked, and it's the best opportunity for you to get to know your animal even better and lose your fear of contact. Even on the way to the brushing area, you take on responsibility: put on the halter, lead the camel, let it stand still.
One sentence is particularly true: „I'm the boss.“ Camels sense insecurity immediately and like to try out whether they can still eat something on the way. It is not dangerous, but it is important to lead in a clear and friendly manner - only when the camel feels safe can it really trust us.
Training in the round pen and first ride
In the sand arena, the so-called round pen, you will deepen the interaction with „your“ camel. First you lead it at a walk, practise stopping and starting, and later also putting it down. Then the saddle is put on in peace and quiet and the camel is allowed to run a few more laps before it goes to the mounting aid.
Depending on your experience, you can ride with a guide - someone leads the camel and you simply enjoy the movement - or you can ride freely and take the lead yourself. In both cases, it is an intense, unforgettable experience.
