When animals touch your heart

There are some encounters you never forget. Not because anything spectacular happened, but because they touch our hearts.

A few days ago, my husband went on a walking trip in Burghausen with a school class and our llamas. Together, they followed the route through the Grüben – past cafés, small shops and lots of people enjoying the summer’s day on the terraces.

Suddenly, a man shouted loudly across the street:

„Heino! Look, there's Heino!“

Almost in disbelief, he stood up and said, with tears in his eyes:

„No, that can’t be true. There’s Heino. I’m finally seeing my Heino again!“

It wasn’t just a fleeting delight at seeing a familiar animal. It was a reunion with an old friend.

Heino is one of our llamas and has accompanied many people over the past few years. On walks, at gatherings and at events, he has touched countless hearts. With his calm, serene manner, he creates something that is hard to put into words – people simply feel at ease around him.

For many years now, Heino has also had a sponsor who visits him regularly. A very special bond has developed between the two of them. For us, an animal sponsorship means far more than just symbolic support. It fosters closeness, trust and shared memories. It is precisely these relationships that make our animals true companions close to our hearts.

When my husband told me this story later, he was fighting back tears himself. Seeing just how deeply one of our animals has moved a person is something very special every single time. It is precisely for moments like these that we do what we do.

At the Lama Oasis, we time and again see that, after spending time with our animals, people go home feeling more relaxed, happier and often a little lighter too. Some still remember „their“ llama years later. Just like the man in Burghausen remembers Heino.

What we can learn from this

Perhaps this is precisely where one of the most important insights lies – not only for our private lives, but also for our work and our interactions with other people.

People rarely remember every word that was spoken or every presentation. They remember how they felt during an encounter. Whether they felt seen. Whether they were treated with respect, interest and genuine attention.

Our animals demonstrate this to us every single day. They give their attention without prejudice, sense people’s moods and treat everyone with the same openness.

Perhaps that, too, is one of the most valuable qualities of good leadership: building relationships that last. Those who truly touch people’s lives leave a lasting impression – sometimes for many years. Not through loudness or perfection, but through authenticity.

The meeting in Burghausen reminded us just how powerful genuine connections can be. Sometimes that connection is formed during a single walk; sometimes it grows over many years – as was the case with Heino’s godmother.

When animals touch our hearts, they give us something that money cannot buy. They remind us to live in the moment, to place our trust in others and to experience genuine connection. These are precisely the qualities we need, not only in life, but also within our families, our teams and our businesses.
